Extra-Curriculum Activities, ECA in short, are a programme introduced in the various schools of Singapore to enrich the pupils' minds. This activities, which aim to stretch the students both mentally and physically, include the different clubs such as the Science Club, Maths Society and the Interact Club. Apart from that, there are also uniform groups such as Scouts, NCC and NPCC, and musical groups like the Chinese Orchestra, English Orchestra and Military Band. Also not forgetting the individual sports games which consist of basketball, softball, water polo, squash and the like. Although these may seem beneficial to the students, many of the students find them a thorn in their flesh, simply because they have lost interest in that particular ECA and thus have to go for it just for the sake of having their attendance marked. If not, they just find them a hindrance to their studies.
So, talk about so much, would there be a day when this programme is fully abolished, when the students would only have to concentrate on their studies? For those who dread going for these ECAs, this might be a pretty good news to them. Just keep your fingers crossed! The future might not be the same again
Perhaps the Ministry of Education and the school should really go into this matter and find out the causes of dislike of the students' for their ECAs. Y ou might not know, these students might be interested in a certain field such as singing, hip-hop dancing, golfing, scuba-diving, etc. which the school does not provide. Therefore they could not really find a ECA of their interest and so were compelled to join one as it is a must in Singapore.
Let us ride into the future - students carrying golf clubs..bowling ball, some holding on to microphones showing their singing talents, how glamorous...
In conclusion, maybe the school should consider this suggestion for that matter. And let us hope that pupils could really pursue their interest in their ECAs in the near future. I believe they could, what about you?
